Dr. Armen Henderson is a Philadelphia native and graduate of Meharry School of Medicine in 2014 and his Master’s from Vanderbilt University.
He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Henderson is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami- Miller School of Medicine.
Since moving to Miami, he has been an organizer with Dream Defenders, a Florida-based social justice organization where he currently serves as Director of Health Programs.
Additionally, he founded the Dade County Street Response, a 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit focusing on physician-led community-broad crisis efforts. In this role, he integrates medical school and residency training into social service delivery and advocacy on a local level.
Dade County Street Response‘s current programming entails free urgent care, such as clinical aid and an alternative to the 911-line. His organization also conducts disaster education and response workshops.
Furthermore, his focus is on environmental justice curriculum. With the assistance of a street medicine team, and community-based trauma recovery center services he is able aid people in critical situations.
Dr. Henderson is also an NMA Climate and Health Equity Fellow.
His capstone will focus on a resilience blueprint to help public and private medical organizations/professionals decrease the morbidity and mortality of disasters.
This blueprint will also guide local, state, and federal crisis policymaking for other communities similarly impacted by disasters around the country.
On October 21, 2021, Molli Mitchell, a columnist for Newsweek, wrote that “Dr. Henderson is one of those incredible people who not only fought on the COVID frontline in the hospital but took his place in the battle for social justice.
According to Mitchell, outside of his hospital shifts, Henderson took to the streets to ensure Florida’s homeless got the protection they needed. He also was a strong voice in the Black Lives Matter protests of the summer of 2020, following the killing of George Floyd on May 25, 2020.”
Convergence: Courage in a Crisis on Netflix is an ambitious documentary about nine unsung heroes and their acts of kindness during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Academy Award-winning director Orlando von Einsiedel said Henderson was a “central part” of the documentary as he represented the people fighting against social injustice.
