Michelle Brown is the Director of Education and Instructional Coordinator at MileStone Academy.
Michelle Brown was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She attended Philadelphia Public Schools and earned her first high school diploma from University City High School Magnet Program. After graduating from high school, Michelle attended and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education from Pennsylvania State University.
She worked in the Philadelphia School System as a special education teacher for over fifteen years. During that time, she had the opportunity to serve in other leadership capacities. To fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a principal, Michelle decided that administration was the next step of her career. She enrolled and attended Gratz College earning a Master of Education Degree and Drexel University earning her Principal Certification.
Michelle’s profound interest and commitment in education stems from her own struggles and challenges growing up in the inner city. Her passion as an educator in seeking solutions to bring about equitable outcomes for the most-at-risk and marginalized students was born from her childhood and young adult experiences. She was told that she would amount to nothing because her ideology and upbringing did not represent the American dream. Her commitment to making a difference has taken her from being a classroom teacher for students with special needs to an outstanding administrator.
It is Michelle’s belief that all scholars regardless of race and social economic status can learn particularly when the focus is on educating and supporting the whole child. She believes learning starts when the scholars enter the building therefore, it’s imperative to create an environment conducive for learning because “Education is the most powerful tool which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela
